Middlesbrough Blog
The day began with us making our way to the Hope Inn (an hour later than planned thanks to a heavy Saturday evening with our visiting Norwegian friends).
The coach then departed at around 10.15 and we were on our way to Middlesbrough. The most bizarre conversation of the day belonged to Gary Edwards when he informed us all he was searching for a new hearse to buy (we know he’s getting a tad old but it seemed a bit premature)! Following an unusually short meet-up with the Police at the rendezvous point we were at the ground just before 12.00pm. After entering the stadium we were pleased to see alcohol was being served especially as our hangovers were slightly improving. Everyone bought themselves a beer with the exception of Will (Rob) and Ryan who added a glass of red wine to their order! We then all stood around enjoying the pre match atmosphere and were all in high spirits.
As kick off approached we all made our way to the seats and the game began. Within three minutes we were already behind and this was then followed by an absolutely cracking header by Giuseppe Bellusci to make it 2-0 going into half time. The second half began and Leeds played much better and a goal was then controversially disallowed for offside, even though the linesman originally awarded a goal (the football league’s corrupt)! Middlesbrough then made it 3-0 shortly before the end of the game after Sol Bamba decided to trip over the ball. He’s still our favourite defender though! Maybe Barnsley Jo had the right of idea of sleeping through some of the match!
As we got back on the bus to head back to Yorkshire (Middlesbrough is definitely not in Yorkshire no matter what they say) there was an air of frustration which only increased when our first crisps and chocolate stop proved less than fruitful. Thankfully this was remedied a few miles down the road when the chocolate and crisps were readily available!
As we travelled the remainder of the journey the mood lifted and the usual good natured and loud banter of the bus returned. As we got back to Leeds it was quite alarming to see a hoard of American and Scottish people returning from Elland Road and even more disturbing when we were told the Scarborough taps was full of rugby fans and we couldn’t get in! A few of us then headed to the nearby Head of Steam and enjoyed a few more beers to round off a day that was disappointing on the pitch but fun as always off it!
